The Powells are a typical American family living in Pacific Bay, California, whose members gain special powers after their plane crashes in the Amazon.
I started watching this show ignoring the small questions that started being raised, like if there is a lake in South America that endows people submerged in its waters with super powers, why is there no super village of indigenous people? The final knife in the heart was the genuine stupidity of all of the characters. The father has super strength, invulnerability and he can jump a quarter mile at a time. His character is by far the most genuine, kind and responsible with his powers, however, he is horribly aloof in combat and puts himself in positions that he easily could rectify with the same powers, but somehow never thinks of it. The mother can run fast, just upwards of 750 MPH. She is a horrible woman, habitually neglects her family and then badgers the father about not spending time with the family. A couple of times the father pointed out that the mother is even worse with the neglect and she retorts saying things like, 'Well, I have a career.' How many times can the pot call the kettle black? Watch this show to find out. Also, even though she runs 750 MPH or so, she somehow avoids breaking the sound barrier, and her hair and clothing are always flawless. Many times when she is running, her hair will fly forward as if she is standing in a windy area, not running forward. She uses her powers constantly in front of other people, yet somehow, no one seems to notice. She runs to work, leaving the car, runs around the house, runs down the freeway, runs across the Mexican border. Later in the show, she will sometimes break the sound barrier, and also leave a trail of flame in her wake, but still no one seems to notice her. Also, inexplicably, sometimes when she is running indoors, it will whip things around with the wind turbulence she is creating and other times, she creates no turbulence whatsoever. The boy has super intelligence, and the only catch given is that he can only remember things he learns for 6 hours at a time. This rule is broken on a regular basis, furthermore, he inexplicably is able to perform complex tasks that are a result of knowledge learned, not intelligence. For example, the kid, having no prior experience in any of these fields, is able to computer hack, decrypt encoded files manually, alter grades in the school computer, become a star quarterback, a pool hustler and a classic car mechanic without ever learning any of it. His vocabulary explodes over night and it's like every technical skill imaginable is already learned. Someone must have pointed that out because mid way through the season, he has to start reading textbooks to perform such technical feats with the rule of only having the new abilities for 6 hours. He also stops playing sports and thereby excelling at them as if there was no talent involved, only math. The girl on the show is a mind reader and takes full advantage of her power by constantly reading the minds of those around her. She misuses her abilities by habitually meddling in other people's lives and using them, across multiple episodes, in order to seduce a boy. She pretends to be an art prodigy by reading the mind of her brother while he is reading an art textbook. Every time she uses her powers to try to 'Help' someone, it ends poorly 100% of the time, but she never stops doing it. This show is full of selfish, immoral, bickering people and plot holes big enough to drive a truck through. Please, if you like super heroes or value consistency, stay far away from this nightmare flop.
My opinion of the show, is split right in the middle between good and bad. I like the concept of ordinary family suddenly became to own super powers, but the execution of this idea is quite bad. Let&#39;s look at previous incarnation of this idea - the incredibles (cartoon) from few years back. It was funny, energetic and in general very well done - till this day I&#39;m not clear why they did not shoot a follow up. Now let&#39;s take a look at this one. Didn&#39;t think I will ever write this by looking on cast before the show, but Michael Chiklis and Julie Benz aren&#39;t suitable for this show. They are great on their own, but I&#39;m just not buying the idea of him being a police sketch artist, and her being a world class scientist - it&#39;s just their part. He was much better as Vik form Shield and Tony from Commish, while she was great at Dexter. Her assistant is way too pretty for her part as well and Michael&#39;s sidekick is completely unreliable as Assistant DA. The story develops too slowly for my taste, yet I&#39;m still intrigued to see what will happen (probably Smalwille phenomena). The kids are actually the ones who make the show so far, especially JJ - either he has the most interesting part of all, or he&#39;s future star of TV/movies. The show worth to watch just for the idea. I hope they will continue the show, and improve just a little bit story line.<br/><br/>Update from April 6,2011. Finished watching last episode of season one, and immediately switched my grade from 7 to 5. All I can say is keep the main cast (except Joshua) and fire the writers. The finale was so incredibly stupid that My interest of the show was immediately reduced to almost none. Who wrote those scenes?! It felt as writers had a bit of imagination at the beginning of the season ( and spread this idea to first few episodes ) and then they just wanted to finish it. I&#39;m pretty sure I won&#39;t be watching second season if it will ever come out…<br/><br/>Update from May 16&#39;th. Just saw that ABC are cancelling this show. That&#39;s nice…

Dad, Jim Powell, has super strength, invulnerability and leaping. He can lift 11,000 pounds (maybe more), has been run over by cars repeatedly without sustaining injury, and can leap up to 1/4 of a mile with a single jump, although his landings are often not very graceful. However, he is vulnerable around the nape area of his neck.<br/><br/>Mom, Stephanie Powell, has super-speed. She can run over 700 mph (maybe more). While moving fast, her reflexes are similarly enhanced as if she is paying attention, other things seem to be frozen in time to her. Her super fast metabolism causes fast digestion so she needs to consume a lot of food. She also displays rapid healing due to her high metabolism.<br/><br/>Daughter, Daphne Powell, can read minds. Further into the series, this evolves into seeing the events that happened to the person she touches as if she was in their shoes. Eventually, she also develops the power of persuasion, though it does not have any effect on her brother JJ.<br/><br/>Son, JJ Powell, has super intellect. He can instantly solve complex math equations, understand complicated theories and such. The extent of his powers is not completely explored but it is assumed he will be able to apply the knowledge and perhaps have enhanced memory.
